Design around the garage – moss graffiti

At the beginning of November, around 20 pupils from year 9 at the Oberschule am Flughafen joined forces with urban geographer and urban greening expert Katja Manz to design an innovative greening project at the Garage Campus – a moss graffiti.

From the idea to implementation
The initial considerations and preparations for the design of the surrounding area were made back in September during an ideas workshop at the Garage Campus. The purpose of the workshop was to take into account the wishes of young people for a quality of life for a neighborhood location, to address innovative greening approaches for brownfield sites and to discuss various measures to beautify the campus.

Taking their own design ideas into account, they collectively decided on the implementation and choice of motif for a moss graffiti. While one part of the group sketched the jointly selected motif on the wall with chalk and mixed the ecological glue, the second part of the group collected moss in the neighborhood along the Kappelbach river. Together, they then pasted and glued the moss to the wall.

The moss graffiti not only stands for the creative implementation of the desire for more greenery in the surrounding area and the importance of nature in urban spaces, but also for the contribution of one’s own ideas and collaborative action. The celebratory inauguration at a small vernissage rounded off the project and paid tribute to the young people’s fantastic achievement.
