Looking Back: The First Months at the Garagen Campus
Since its opening in March, the Garagen Campus has quickly grown into a vibrant space for art, culture, and community. It’s a place where people come together to exhibit, build, dance, discuss – and most importantly, to create collectively.
A standout moment was the Art Week in May, when students from the Dr. Wilhelm-André-Gymnasium and the Lothar von Faber School in Nuremberg spent an entire week working creatively on campus. They wrapped it up with a public vernissage, turning the space into a colorful, buzzing chaos full of artistic energy.

In April, two exhibitions highlighted female perspectives in Chemnitz:
“Part of It – Piece of the Whole. Women in Chemnitz” (Photography by Beate Knappe)
“Women Make Prints – Blossoms of Art from Chemnitz” (Kreative Werkstatt Dresden e.V.)
During Europe Week, visitors joined in on folding, painting and performing: creative hands-on workshops by FabLab and Holzkombinat brought people together, while Prague’s theatre group Lachende Bestien performed “Like Lions”, a Czech-German play by Roman Sikora.
On May 9, Europe Day, we celebrated the opening of the exhibition #3000Garagen – a project exploring themes of city, change, and future. The exhibition will be on view at Garagen Campus until the end of November 2025.
As part of the “Dancing Neighbours” project, seniors joined a dance workshop led by Japanese choreographer Yoko Ando, discovering how much joy movement can bring – far beyond traditional dance formats.
Every Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., we invite visitors to join the “Garagen Campus Stories” – casual tours that share the story of this unique place, its architecture, and the many personal anecdotes behind it. Custom group tours are also available on request.
And we’re just getting started: together with Soziales Förderwerk e.V., we’re developing an inclusive café, where people with disabilities will receive training in hospitality and service – a space where participation and pleasure go hand in hand. We’re still looking for committed supporters and craftspeople to help with the next renovation phase – feel free to get in touch!
The Garagen Campus will continue to grow as a place full of ideas, encounters, and projects – spanning art, society, education, movement, and sports. Stay up to date with everything that’s happening right here on our website, or follow us on Instagram and Facebook.
