Garage of independence

The Garage of Independence creates new action spaces for young people on the Garage Campus. It is an important contribution to increasing the attractiveness of the living environment of children, adolescents and young adults in their city. The aim is to understand and improve the living situations of these young target groups and to make life in Chemnitz more attractive in the long term, thus preventing them from leaving.

The Garage of Independence creates places on the Garage Campus that are designed to appeal to young people and reflect their interests and needs. These are meeting places, places to “hang out” and party. One stop becomes a buddy exchange, where people make new acquaintances and find companions for projects. Inside and outside the area, there will be games and sports facilities, rehearsal rooms, open stages for upcoming talents, and a street art workshop.

Here, too, the focus is on participation and joint creation: children plan their playground, young people initiate a virtual up-cycling meeting place, young adults run the smallest club in Europe. Through responsibility and doing it themselves, young people learn about their abilities and experience a sense of empowerment. Various programs and projects support them in taking action themselves. For this purpose, the Garage Campus involves educational institutions, cooperation partners and their programs such as Erasmus+, Jugend forscht, GTS projects and others).
