Project: Garage Companions

Since 2021, the former tram depot of the Chemnitzer Verkehrs-AG (CVAG) has been developed into the intervention space of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025, the “Garage Campus”, and has been undergoing a transformation process ever since. Many people from Chemnitz, the region and Europe have been involved in the development of the new cultural venue and more and more are interested in helping to shape the site.

The Garage Companions project also gives the former employees of the former depot the opportunity to see themselves as part of the ongoing process and provide insights into their hidden stories about the site and its past. Through their personal view and the linking of their story(s), it strengthens the connection between the history, present and future of the site.

The project “Garage Companions” is a European cooperation with Bureau Ruimtekoers (NL), which specializes in cultural participation, community art and participatory design. Together with artists and cultural practitioners from the Netherlands and Germany, the stories of the former employees of the depot in Chemnitz will be artistically processed and made visible through this artistic project (C the Unseen!). The Garage Campus will become a stage on which the stories of the former depot employees will be presented.
