Garagen-Campus Stories: Past and Present

The Garagen-Campus was not always a place for culture and events. It was once home to the Kappel tram depot – a central hub of public transport in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Today, historical traces meet new uses, and the site is gradually evolving into an open space for connection, culture and exchange.

As part of regular experience days, the campus opens its doors to visitors from Chemnitz and the surrounding region. Together with the Straßenbahnmuseum Chemnitz, guided tours and program days are offered once a month, making the past, present and future of the site tangible.

The guided tours invite visitors to rediscover the history of the former Kappel depot: from the 19th century to the era of public transport in Karl-Marx-Stadt, and through to the transformation of the site in recent years. Personal memories connected to working at the depot also find their place here. At the same time, the tours offer a glimpse into the future of the area, which continues to develop into a diverse and vibrant campus.

In addition to the historical tours, the experience days feature a varied program including games, sports, entertainment and historic vehicle rides in an authentic setting.

• The guided tours are free of charge; donations are welcome.
• Meeting point: 15 minutes before the start in front of the Garagen-Campus office.
• The number of participants is limited.
