April 1 , 14:00 – April 30 , 16:00
In 1990, in the midst of a historic upheaval, photographer Beate Knappe travelled to Chemnitz – a city caught between the remnants of the GDR and the new possibilities of a united Germany. Beate Knappe photographed women in their private surroundings and at their workplaces, which would often change profoundly just a few months after reunification.
The exhibition BESTANDTEIL – Stück vom Ganzen – Frauen in Chemnitz shows these women at a time of change, when society was looking for new structures and the place of women in this transformation was still unclear.
35 years later, the exhibition returns to Chemnitz – to a city that has evolved, to a society that has changed and invites us to reflect on the transformation: How has the place of women in society changed? How is their contribution perceived today?
The exhibition can be seen from 1 April to 30 April 2025 and is open from Tuesday to Thursday from 2pm to 4pm. The exhibition can also be viewed at other times on request.
